A shocking sex scandal has rocked Thailand’s Buddhist community, where nine monks were expelled after being linked to a massive blackmail and money-laundering case.
The controversy began after a senior monk went missing from a prominent temple. Investigators traced the case to a woman found in possession of five mobile phones containing over 80,000 explicit photos and videos with several monks.

According to officials, the woman had been secretly recording intimate encounters with monks over the past three years. She later used these videos to blackmail them, reportedly extorting around ₹100 crore.
In some cases, monks were threatened with exposure unless they paid large sums. One monk allegedly paid over ₹1 crore before resigning from his post and fleeing the country.

As the scandal widened, nine monks were defrocked for their involvement. Some have gone into hiding, while others are under investigation for possible financial misconduct.
Authorities also suspect links to money laundering, and the case has led to arrests beyond the monastic circle. A formal inquiry is now underway into temple funds and their misuse.

The revelations have triggered public anger, with calls for stricter oversight on religious institutions. Discussions are underway to implement tighter regulations for monastic conduct and financial accountability.
The national religious office has proposed amendments to make such misconduct punishable by law, and royal titles of several monks have already been revoked.
The incident has exposed serious issues within the religious hierarchy where senior monks often evade scrutiny, and victims are silenced. The scandal has raised deep moral questions about the state of monastic life and its modern-day challenges.
As the investigation continues, thousands of monks across the country are now under review, and public trust in religious leadership faces a major crisis.
