The attack has reignited anger within the Indian diaspora, with many demanding stronger safety measures for international students in Australia.
Community leaders and advocacy groups have called for swift justice and stricter penalties for racially motivated violence.
The Indian government is expected to raise the issue diplomatically, as similar incidents in the past have caused tension between the two countries.
