Faith and Frenzy: Kanwar Yatra Sees Both Devotion and Disorder

The annual Kanwar Yatra, a major pilgrimage in North India, is underway. While it draws millions of devotees of Lord Shiva, this year too, the event has faced criticism due to instances of vulgar dancing, loud DJ music, and traffic disruptions caused by a few participants.

In several cities across Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Haryana, videos have surfaced showing Kanwariyas dancing to vulgar Bollywood songs, often blocking roads and creating public inconvenience.

Many are seen wearing inappropriate clothing and behaving in ways that offend the spiritual nature of the yatra.

Authorities have taken note. DJ music has been banned in multiple districts. Police presence has been increased, and CCTV surveillance is being used to identify and act against miscreants.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has warned of strict action against those tarnishing the image of the yatra.

Amid such disruptions, inspiring stories are also emerging. In Muzaffarnagar, a woman named Asha is walking nearly 150 km with her paralyzed husband on her back. She says this is her way of thanking Lord Shiva for saving his life. Her devotion has touched many hearts.

Across cities like Varanasi and Prayagraj, young devotees are walking barefoot for over 100 km to offer Ganga water at Shiv temples.

Many local families and volunteers have set up free food stalls, medical tents, and resting spots, offering help to all pilgrims, regardless of background.

The Kanwar Yatra continues to represent devotion, sacrifice, and unity.

However, its dignity can only be preserved if both the administration and devotees remain responsible. The misbehavior of a few should not overshadow the faith and sincerity of millions.
